Sellers can send text message and ad will be posted for free till car is sold

SELLING your car can be as simple a matter as sending an SMS.

Car owners who wish to use Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) online car advertising portal, STCars, to sell their vehicle can just send in a text message.

The ad will be posted for them for free, and will stay up for as long as the car is available for sale.

Those wishing to sell their car can text "FREE" to 78701 and customer service officers will call them for details of their car, and post the ad for them.

"We're offering another channel to those who are not online-savvy or those who wish to go online to sell, but don't have the time to," said Mr Jack Chua, STCars' senior product manager.

STCars is an online platform where users can post advertisements for free to buy, sell or rent new and used vehicles. It was formerly known as ST701 Cars.

It used to cost $8 to place an ad that would run for two weeks.

The SMS service was started on Monday.

The portal received more than 10 messages on Christmas Day, a day after it was launched.

Among those who used the service was pre-school educator Diane Lim, 53, who had wanted to advertise her Mitsubishi Colt on STCars but had no time to fill in all the information required.

She said: "When I saw that I could just send in an SMS and they'd do it for me, I thought, why not?"

Mr Chua said this service came after the "very encouraging" feedback to the launch of STCars last month. Traffic to the site has almost trebled since the launch, he added.

Users can browse through more than 13,000 used-car listings on the site.

Information on cars, services, car accessories and reviews written by SPH journalists are also available.

According to the online portal, used-car sales have exceeded those of new cars since 2010.

This year, STCars expects close to 80,000 used cars to be sold, compared to the expected 28,000 new cars registered this year.
