SPH Chairman Awarded Honorary Doctorate (ST)

SINGAPORE Press Holdings and Keppel Corporation chairman Lee Boon Yang was awarded an honorary doctorate in veterinary science by the University of Queensland on Friday.

The honour was in recognition of Dr Lee's distinguished career, years of service to Singapore and contributions to the University of Queensland.

Dr Lee first enrolled in the Australian university as a Colombo Plan scholar in 1965 and studied veterinary science.

He graduated in 1971, after which he returned to Singapore and joined the Government's Primary Production Department as a veterinarian.

In this role, Dr Lee helped lead national research and development projects to minimise pollution from pig and poultry farms.

In 1984, he entered politics, serving six consecutive terms as a member of parliament.

He was Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts before retiring from government in March 2009.

In his political career which spanned more than two decades, Dr Lee, 64, held various portfolios, including Minister for Defence, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Minister for Manpower.
