BackFeb 02, 2012

REGISTRATION for the annual Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Schools Relay Championships opens today.

The event – in its 20th year – will be held at the Bishan Stadium from March 10-11.

The Championships comprise the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m and 4x800m relays – and will feature boys and girls in the A Division (17-19 years), B Division (15-16 years) and C Division (13-14 years).

Trophies will be given out to the six division champions, with the SPH Overall Champions Trophy going to the school with the most division titles.

Singapore Sports School (SSP) picked up the accolade last year after winning both the boys and girls' B and C divisions. Raffles Institution Junior College were crowned the A Division champions for both the boys and girls' categories.

The best-performing relay team will also receive the Tay Cheng Khoon Memorial Trophy, named after the late Sports Editor of The Straits Times who died in 2007.

Said Tang Weng Fei, president of Singapore Athletic Association (SAA): "The championships have established themselves as a major event in the SAA calendar."

Added Ginney Lim, SPH's General Counsel and Executive Vice-President of Corporate Communications: "In the last 20 years, new athletic talents have been discovered, and have progressed to representing Singapore and establishing national records."

Five records were set at last year's edition.

Among the stars to emerge from the event were middle-distance runner Zachary Devaraj from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and sprinter Lynette Goh from SSP.

Entry forms for the championships are available on the SAA website at

Registration closes on Feb 29.
