Ascendas Chief Exec Joins SPH As An ID (BT)

SINGAPORE Press Holdings (SPH) has appointed the president and CEO of Ascendas Pte Ltd, Chong Siak Ching, as an independent director, making her the first woman to join the media group's board.

Ms Chong sits on the boards of Ascendas and its subsidiaries and is also the deputy chairman of Spring Singapore and chairman of IE Singapore's Network India Steering Committee.

Ascendas specialises in developing, managing and marketing IT, science, business, industrial & logistics parks, high-tech facilities, office and retail space.

Additionally, Ms Chong - a former JTC Corporation deputy chief executive officer - is a council member of the Singapore Business Federation. She brings to the board a wealth of knowledge pertaining to the regional real estate market and experience in business space management.

SPH, which also has a property division, owns and manages Paragon on Orchard Road. Its wholly owned subsidiary Times Development has developed a 43-storey residential condominium called Sky@eleven on Thomson Road. Meanwhile, SPH's latest retail offering, The Clementi Mall, will come onstream next year.

SPH chairman Tony Tan said: 'On behalf of the board, I welcome Siak Ching as a new member. With her experience and qualifications, she is eminently qualified to contribute to the board and the company's growth.'

Dr Tan added: 'Our directors bring to SPH a wealth of knowledge in diverse sectors. They will help SPH build our core print business and seize new opportunities to grow the company in other sectors.'

Ms Chong holds a Bachelor of Estate Management (Honours), a Masters in Business Administration from the National University of Singapore and has also completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School. Last year, she won the Outstanding CEO of the Year award at the Singapore Business Awards.
