THREE Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) papers - The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao and Berita Harian - have landed a prestigious award for newspaper print quality.

They were among 109 newspapers in 43 countries awarded membership in the International Newspaper Color Quality Club (INCQC) for 2010 through 2012, said the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers in a statement yesterday.

The awards, held every two years since 1994, set quality standards for newspaper colour reproduction.

The successful newspapers have demonstrated their capacity to reliably reproduce colour images and advertisements consistently, worldwide, and with the intended colour effect, the statement said.

'The quality initiative helps ensure that the reader receives an attractive, high-quality product and the advertiser an outstanding advertising carrier,' said Mr Manfred Werfel, executive director of newspaper production at the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers.

Other winners admitted to the exclusive Color Quality Club this year include Hong Kong's Apple Daily, The Asahi Shimbun in Japan and The Times of India.

The Straits Times and The Business Times first participated in the competition in 2000 and were successful.

The papers, together with Lianhe Zaobao and Berita Harian, won again in 2006.
