Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) was named the sole recipient of this year's SSO Benefactor Award.
The award was presented to SPH by President S R Nathan at the Singapore Symphony Orchestra's (SSO) 30th anniversary benefit dinner held at the Shangri-La Singapore last night.
The award was started in 2005 to honour corporations and individuals who donate $1 million to the orchestra.
A total of 12 sponsors, including companies such as CIMB-GK Securities and Far East Organization, have received the award over the years.
SPH has been a long-time supporter of the national orchestra and has made a cumulative contribution exceeding $1 million over the years.
In 2005, it launched the SPH Gift of Music series with free concerts by the SSO at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
The series has brought the SSO and classical music to various parts of Singapore, from school campuses to the HDB heartlands.
Ms Ginney Lim, SPH's general counsel and executive vice-president of corporate communications, who received the award on behalf of the company, said the company is honoured to receive the award.
She added that the award is especially meaningful as it coincides with SPH's 25th anniversary this year.
The SSO also raised about $1.2million from last night's event, where Dutch jazz singer Laura Fygi performed for more than 600 guests.
