(SINGAPORE) Singapore Press Holdings' stable of newspapers must be flexible and move with the changing needs of readers who are plugged into multiple news platforms on a 24-hour basis, SPH chairman Tony Tan said yesterday.

He was speaking at a lohei session organised by the company's Chinese newspapers division to celebrate Chinese New Year.

He praised the Chinese papers for having transformed themselves with redesigns and stronger content in the face of the need to stay in touch with existing readers while cultivating new and younger ones.

But, 'if you look at Singapore alone, the future is quite bleak', Dr Tan said of newspapers in general.

'We have to take them abroad and plug in China's growth, as well as into other developing countries including India and South-east Asia,' he said.

'We have made some inroads into China, led by Zaobao, SPH Magazines and more recently, SPH Media Box Office.'
