SINGAPORE Press Holdings (SPH) chief executive (CEO) Alan Chan has been appointed chairman of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) board with effect from today.

He takes over from Mr Bobby Chin, who stepped down yesterday at the end of his term.

Mr Chin has been leading the board of the URA - the national land-use planning authority - since 2001, after joining the board in 1997.

Under his chairmanship, the URA introduced a number of strategic planning and development initiatives, including the vision to make Marina Bay a 'Garden City by the Bay'.

Mr Chan has been a member of the URA board since last December.

Prior to his appointment to SPH, he was the permanent secretary of the Transport Ministry, capping a 24-year civil service career.

Six new members were also appointed to the URA board: advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather Asia-Pacific co-chairman Tham Khai Meng; Monetary Authority of Singapore deputy managing director Ong Chong Tee; DP Architects chairman Chan Sui Him; W Architects managing director Mok Wei Wei; Jurong Town Corp CEO Chong Lit Cheong; and Singapore Armed Forces joint intelligence director Bernard Tan.

They will effectively replace Woha Architects director Wong Mun Summ; Lianhe Zaobao chief editor Lim Jim Koon; Wiser Asset Manager CEO Chin Ean Wah; Singapore Tourism Board CEO Lim Neo Chian and Singapore Armed Forces naval operations head Sim Gim Guan, who all stepped down yesterday.
