NEWSPAPERS under Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) have clinched five awards at the prestigious PANPA Newspaper Advertising Awards 2006.

The awards are an annual event that recognises excellence in newspaper-created advertisements. Entries hail from the cream of the region's newspapers.

The Straits Times' Health & You supplement won the award for best advertising feature or supplement in the category for newspapers with circulation above 50,000.

The supplement was produced to draw attention to insurance company AIA's policies and to attract people to a two-day health fair.

The supplement contributed to the fair achieving a visitorship of about 120,000 people.

Among the other awards, SPH's Chinese Newspapers Division - which comprises the three Chinese dailies Lianhe Zaobao, Shinmin Daily News and Lianhe Wanbao - won the award for the most effective use of colour. The award, also for newspapers with circulation above 50,000, was for its Children's Day Carnival advertisement.

'SPH is synonymous with print advertising in Singapore and its suite of newspapers continually strives to scale new heights and elevate the benchmark in print advertising,' said SPH in a statement yesterday.

PANPA, or the Pacific Area Newspaper Publisher's Association, is a non-profit industry association representing newspapers in the Asia-Pacific region. Its members include newspaper publishers from the Pacific region, as well as most English-language newspapers in South-east Asia and the South Pacific.
