TOP news stories from Singapore's largest news organisation will be available on virtually all cellphones here when a new mobile news service is launched on Tuesday.

For $3 a month, cellphone subscribers can read full versions of The Straits Times, The Business Times or Lianhe Zaobao while on the move.

Those who want lighter reads can also sign up for a selection of technology, fashion and health stories from the three weekly news magazines, Digital Life, Urban and Mind Your Body.

These Singapore Press Holdings mobile news services were previously available only to StarHub's i-Mode subscribers. Now, all M1, SingTel and StarHub cellphone subscribers with WAP phones that can access the Internet can sign up.

Said Mr Raymond Teoh, senior manager for SPH's Internet business unit: 'Offering SPH news on the mobile platform is part of our commitment to reach readers through the different platforms and channels.'

Besides access to news stories from the three newspapers, users can also sign up to access a breaking news site updated from 6.30am to midnight daily with local and foreign news from the newsrooms of The Straits Times, The Business Times and The New Paper.

'Through our experience with i-Mode, people are especially interested in accessing breaking news,' said Mr Teoh. So to better meet subscribers' needs, news updates for the new WAP-based mobile service will be more detailed and also more frequent.

Said PR consultant Jeremy Seow: 'I usually get to catch up on news updates on TV only at night, so being able to do it on the go would be good. And $3 is a small price to pay.'

Signing up for the service is easy. Cellphone subscribers just need to send a message containing the word 'SPHNEWS' to 71117.
