SINGAPORE Press Holdings has launched a WAP version of its mobile news service for SingTel, StarHub and M1 mobile phone subscribers - a move that extends it to another 2.5 million post-paid subscribers.

Previously, SPH Mobile News was available to only StarHub subscribers who used a particular phone model and subscribed to i-mode.

The increase in potential subscribers is 'very significant', said Ng Chew Wee from SPH's product development and branding unit, who declined to reveal the number of i-mode subscribers.

SPH said in a statement that 'the majority of mobile phone handsets used in Singapore are WAP-enabled models, despite a recent rise in the take-up rates of the newer 3G phones'.

SPH Mobile News subscribers will get full access to news from The Straits Times, The Business Times and Lianhe Zaobao for as little as $3 a month, with news from the first two available after 6.30 am and from the third after 8 am.

StarHub was the first telecoms company to make mobile news available, via its i-mode service in November 2005.
