SPH sets up Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship

THE Singapore Press Holdings Foundation has set up the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship in memory of SPH's former chairman.

SPH Foundation chairman Tony Tan said: 'The SPH Foundation hopes to play a part to develop people who can contribute to Singapore in many ways as significantly as Mr Lim.'

Meant for Singaporeans from low-income families, the scholarship will be tenable for full-time courses in English, Chinese, Malay and Indian Studies at the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University and SIM University.

The chairman of the scholarship selection committee, Robert Loh, said: 'Through the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship, the foundation hopes to inspire and open up more opportunities to develop young Singaporeans, regardless of their family backgrounds, to step out and serve the country as Mr Lim had done.' Each Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship is worth about $40,000 and can go towards study for up to a four-year honours degree. The scholarship amount covers all course and tuition fees, and a living and book allowance as well.

The foundation has also committed to sponsoring up to eight students at any given time.

The scholarship is open to Singapore citizens whose family income is below $3,000. No bond is required.

Application for the scholarships opens on Aug 12. Forms can be obtained from All applications must reach the foundation by Aug 31.

The foundation, set up under the aegis of Mr Lim and with a seed contribution of $20 million from SPH in 2003, will fund the scholarships.
