(SINGAPORE) Cheong Yip Seng, editor-in-chief of Singapore Press Holdings' English and Malay Newspapers Division (EMND), last night got a rousing farewell from the SPH board, which hosted dinner for him at Raffles Hotel.

More than 70 of his colleagues, including senior management and editors, came to say goodbye and congratulate him on his fruitful career. He will step down on Dec 31, after heading EMND for almost 20 years.

A veteran newsman, he started his career when he was 20, as a cub reporter covering crime and worked his way up to be editor, first of the New Nation - predecessor of The New Paper - and then The Straits Times, which achieved record circulation under him.

On his new role as an editorial adviser to SPH, he said: 'Over the past 43 years I've collected a fair amount of war stories. Hopefully this collection will be of some value.'
