BEING an 'informed consumer' will take on a whole new meaning, with shopping malls soon to be festooned with digital screens showing advertisements, promotions and even the latest news. Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) outdoor advertising subsidiary SPH MediaBoxOffice (MBO) has signed a deal with mall owner and manager CapitaLand Retail to install 100 of its digital screens in 10 malls around the island.

These 42-inch screens will be placed at lift lobbies, escalator landings, customer service counters and other strategic locations, MBO said.

The screens are to be rolled out in phases, starting this month in malls like Plaza Singapura, Junction 8, Funan DigitaLife Mall and Lot One.

'The screens in the 10 malls will be linked as a network, enabling an advertiser to reach many shoppers at the same time with the same message,' said MBO in a statement.

Another feature, to be added soon, will enable shoppers to 'download' shopping vouchers and discount coupons from the screen onto their mobile phones.

The screen will also feature the latest news straight from SPH's various publications, including The Straits Times, The Business Times and The New Paper.

'The partnership with SPH MediaBoxOffice is indeed an innovative approach to embrace shoppers and tenants in this new digital age,' said CapitaLand Retail's chief executive Pua Seck Guan.

SPH MediaBoxOffice chairman Leslie Fong said: 'The tie-up with CapitaLand Retail is the first of many more partnerships with major shopping centres and retailers.

'We are constantly on the lookout for new technologies in outdoor media advertising.'

Besides LED and digital displays, MBO also offers billboard advertising as well as an events marketing and sponsorship platform.
