PHOTOS by Straits Times photographers will soon be appearing on websites and in newspapers, magazines and books around the world.

The French news agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP), signed an agreement with Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) yesterday to market pictures shot by the paper's photographers via AFP's web-based ImageForum service.

There has been 'considerable demand' for pictures by Straits Times photographers by the media industry, said the head of SPH's Internet business unit, Mr Raymond Teoh.

'We take a lot of good photos, and this will be another way of maximising the use of the pictures, many of which are good enough to be used in any publication.'
- MS ANGELINA CHOY, art and picture editor of The Straits Times

The paper's team has won awards from organisations like the Society of Publishers in Asia and the Society for News Design.

The new partnership with AFP's ImageForum service - one of the world's most extensive collections of news and stock photos - will make it easy for international media to find and buy the photos via the Internet.

This is the first such partnership for SPH, which publishes 14 newspapers and over 90 magazines here.

Previously, organisations interested in the pictures and other materials had to contact SPH's resource centre.

There are over 250 exclusive news photographs, historical pictures, infographics and other materials from SPH's archives already available at the ImageForum service located at www.imageforum2.afp. com, with new ones added daily.

Photos by other SPH English newspapers, like The New Paper, will be added to the service over time.

An account is needed to view and download the pictures.

The Straits Times art and picture editor, Ms Angelina Choy, added that the partnership was 'a good way to get the Straits Times name out'.

'We take a lot of good photos, and this will be another way of maximising the use of the pictures, many of which are good enough to be used in any publication.'
