Singapore Press Holdings launches new corporate logo to mark 25th anniversary

Singapore, 30 March 2009 - Singapore Press Holdings Ltd (SPH) today unveiled its new corporate logo at an event that marked the start of its 25th anniversary celebrations.

Guest-of-Honour President S R Nathan, together with SPH chairman Dr Tony Tan, unveiled the new logo at SPH's headquarters at News Centre. President Nathan was Executive Chairman of The Straits Times Press from 1982-1988 and an SPH Director from 1984 -1988.

Gathered at the launch to witness this significant milestone for SPH were its directors, staff and invited guests, including Minister Lee Boon Yang and Senior Minister of State Lui Tuck Yew from the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts.

SPH was formed on August 4, 1984 through a merger of three organisations - the Straits Times Press group, the Singapore News and Publications Limited and Times Publishing Berhad which was later de-merged from SPH in 1988. The merger brought together the English, Malay and Chinese newspapers under one roof. SPH later also bought Tamil Murasu Pte Ltd.

The SPH logo at the time of this merger was the stylised initials of SPH put together to form a graphic of the web and rollers of a newspaper printing press. Explaining the rationale for the change in corporate logo, SPH Chairman Tony Tan said in his speech: "With SPH moving beyond print, we think it is time to rebrand ourselves to better represent our current portfolio and future direction. While print remains our core business, we also have a wide spectrum of other businesses to complement each other and serve everyone. The new logo's design portrays SPH's initiative in engaging and connecting with all our stakeholders. Its colours and typeface reinforces SPH's stature as a leading media organisation - confident, authoritative, yet approachable."

In the short span of 25 years, SPH has built up its brand goodwill and awareness among its business partners and clients, while its flagship newspapers have an even richer heritage and standing - more than 160 years for The Straits Times and 85 years for Lianhe Zaobao. Keeping in mind this rich heritage and the SPH brand name, the new logo retains the initials of SPH. However, to signify SPH's presence across multi-media platforms and in line with its brand essence of 'Engaging Minds, Enriching Lives', the initials are now interlocking. The modern typography and colour scheme also reflect SPH's forward-looking yet approachable attitude towards its users and clients.

To mark its 25th year of business excellence, a special anniversary logo has also been created. Strong colours represent the rich content and reflect the dynamic landscape of the media business. Visually bold yet elegant, the SPH 25th Anniversary logo is used on all its corporate products throughout 2009.

Paragon, the premier shopping mall, will be celebrating with SPH its 25th anniversary by providing shoppers with a musical experience. Owned by Orchard 290, a subsidiary of SPH, Paragon has lined up a series of free weekend concerts in April and May. There will also be $25,000 worth of shopping vouchers to be won. The SPH corporate website has undergone a major revamp, adding new features and sporting a new look and feel. The remodelled website has a modern, clean design format for easy viewing and better navigation. Information is now reorganised for specific user needs, be it an advertiser, subscriber or investor.

Commenting on the company's 25th anniversary, Mr Alan Chan, CEO of SPH, said: "SPH has come a long way and weathered all kinds of storms in the past 25 years. We began planning our logo change two years ago to coincide with our 25th anniversary, reflecting the importance of this milestone to SPH. On this silver anniversary, I wish to assure all our stakeholders that as we celebrate our past 25 years of achievements, we are committed to achieving another 25 years of excellence, even in these challenging times."
